Rudolf Koch, the master of 1920s gothic scripts. I built this typeface as a tribute to one of the most amazing modern Gothic typefaces around. I respected the basics of this letterform, but added my own special adaptations to the collection. Roughly 450 glyphs are in this collection of five sets, two LC and three UC. Roughly 115MB download.

Since I was a kid, I have been surround by letters as my Father owned his own sign painting shop. Letters were in my blood. My Father would take me to the job sites where he worked, and his sign shop occupied most of our basement. As his helper, he showed me the ropes to old school hand lettering and sign painting. The idea for Designer Type came to me around 2010 while working on a piece called, “Wild Horses.” I was using a common graphic design technique called ‘paste up.’ I had used paste up in the 1980s where I created an entire composition based on the best lines of calligraphy, then paste them onto an artboard — an old school technique prior to the digital age. This shows some book cover design options for a recent project I completed. My role was to come up with an attractive cover title, and recommend a font for secondary text and background textures. I also included some placeholder graphics in option 6 for the publishing company. Along with the options shown above, I provided the client a written description of each option (pros/cons), fonts, graphics, and background texture(s) specifications. Once my client selected their desired option, they received the final files for high resolution production. Continue reading
